Virginia City

Virginia City, Nevada

Virginia City, located in Storey County, is south and east of Reno nestled on the eastern slopes of the Virginia range, in the shadow of Mount Davidson. From Reno you would take Highway 395 south and then climb along the two lane scenic route 341, known as Geiger Grade, that goes through parts of the Toiyabe Forest to reach Virginia City. At an elevation of 6,220 feet, and due to its secluded location, it is not uncommon for Geiger Grade to occasionally close during winter snowstorms.

Virginia City is known primarily as a tourist destination due to its rich history, and was presented the Distinctive Destinations Awards by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2009. Mark Twain is arguably the city’s most famous early resident when he lived here for two years writing for the local newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise. The town has changed little since its heyday in the 1860s when the mining bonanza turned Virginia City into the most important industrial city between Denver and San Francisco. The Comstock Lode discovery and subsequent growth of Virginia City is unequaled in the history of the American West. By 1876 Nevada produced over half of all the precious metals in the United States; over 400 million in the coinage of the day coming from Virginia City’s mines. The mines are now all defunct, but the saloons and Victorian era stores and houses remain.

Home prices in Virginia City are relatively low with a population of only 855 residents. The living here is mostly rural. Though there are elementary, middle and high schools there are not any grocery stores, fast food, or other amenities other than the western tourist stores on the main street. Residents must drive to Reno for most items which is 30 – 40 minutes away depending on traffic and the weather. However, Virginia City hosts many popular annual events throughout the year such as the Street Vibrations motorcycle rallies, Hot August Nights classic car shows and parade, Comstock Cowboy parade and events, Civil War Days, Camel & Ostrich Races, Victorian Steampunk Ball & Parade, Outhouse Races, Haunted History Ghost Tours, and V & T Railroad holiday steam train rides.
