Carson City

Carson City, Nevada

Carson City is the state capitol of Nevada located just east of the main Sierra Nevada rise and Lake Tahoe about 30 miles south of Reno. The town originated as a stopover for California bound emigrants, but developed into a city with the Comstock Lode, a silver strike in the mountains to the northeast. The city has served as the capital of Nevada since statehood in 1864 and for much of its history was a hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, although the tracks were removed in the 1950s. There are attractive residential areas in the mountains and valleys 15 miles further south into the Carson Valley towards the small agricultural centers of Minden and Gardnerville. However, homes in Carson City are generally less expensive than those found in Reno.

There is plenty to do of historic interest such as the Nevada State Railroad Museum and the historic downtown area of Carson City which has many local shops and restaurants. Lake Tahoe is just to the west and Virginia City and other mining centers in the vicinity offer recreational opportunities. There is the Carson Hot Springs and the Historic Bowers Mansion with parks and a public pool. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools, Carson High School, and Western Nevada College (WNC) which is a regionally accredited, two-year and four-year institution.

Carson City's first modern bus system, Jump Around Carson, or JAC, opened to the public in October 2005 with stops around Carson. However, there is virtually no ground public transportation to other destinations. Passenger trains haven't served Carson City since 1950, when the Virginia and Truckee Railroad was shut down. Greyhound Lines stopped their bus services to the town in 2006 and Amtrak discontinued their connecting thruway bus to Sacramento in 2008.
